How do i use the NYC subway ticket machines?

1. Enter the Subway Station:

Find an entrance to a subway station and make your way to the ticket machine area.

2. Locate the Ticket Machine:

Look for a tall, touchscreen-based machine labeled "MetroCard Vending Machine." These are usually found near the turnstiles or platform entrances.

3. Choose the Language:

Touch the screen to select your preferred language (if the languages are not automatically displayed).

4. Select Purchase Option:

On the main menu, tap the "Purchase" button. It usually appears as a green rectangular button.

5. Choose Ticket Type:

Select the ticket type you want to purchase. For a single ride, tap "Pay-Per-Ride." If you plan to make multiple trips, choose "Unlimited Ride" ( MetroCard ).

6. Choose Payment Method:

Tap the "Cash" button if you're paying with paper currency. Choose "Credit Card or Smart Device" if you want to pay using a credit/debit card or mobile payment options like Apple Pay or Google Pay.

7. Insert Cash (if applicable):

If you selected cash payment, follow the on-screen instructions to insert your bills into the bill acceptor slot. The machine accepts $1, $5, $10, and $20 bills. It does not make change, so ensure you have the exact amount.

8. Insert Credit Card or Smart Device (if applicable):

If paying by credit card or smart device, tap the designated area marked for contactless payments. Follow the prompts on the screen to complete the payment.

9. Print Your Ticket:

Once your payment is processed, the ticket machine will print your MetroCard (for unlimited ride) or Single-Ride tickets. Be sure to take the tickets or cards from the designated slot.

10. Collect Change (if applicable):

If you paid with cash and inserted more than the exact fare, the machine will dispense any change that's due.

11. Use the Ticket or Card:

To enter the subway system, swipe your MetroCard or insert your Single-Ride ticket into the turnstile. The green light on the turnstile will indicate that you can go through.

12. Keep the Ticket or Card Safe:

Hold on to your MetroCard or Single-Ride ticket throughout your subway trip to exit through the turnstile at your destination.
